The impact of migrant remittances on household welfare in Afghanistan (evidence from Aybak city, Samangan province)

This study examined the impact of migrant remittances on household welfare in Afghanistan, using Aybak city in Samangan province as a case study. The primary data were obtained from a questionnaire delivered to 230 households. The households were selected based on a convenience sampling approach. The Working-Leser function was applied to estimate the impact of remittances on household expenditure. The empirical outcomes exposed that external remittance income has no effect on the expenditure of the households that receive remittance payments. The internal remittance income is positively correlated with non-food expenditure share, but it is negatively linked with housing, healthcare and durable expenditure share. Moreover, the results also revealed that the internal and external remittance income differs by subject in the sample.
