Abstract

Nangarhar’s economy, in several ways, including job creation, income generation, food security and many other aspects. The main objective of this study is to identify the contribution of broiler poultry farms to household income and food security and to identify the challenges faced by broiler poultry farms in Nangarhar province. The results of this study in Nangarhar province show that the majority of broiler poultry farms are faced with various constraints such as the lack of owner capital and credit opportunities, the lack of high quality of feed and the higher price of feed, the lack of hatcheries and additional issues limiting the development of the poultry sector in the province. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that the income from poultry farms, livestock and business is statistically significant in influencing the total income of the target households, which means that broiler poultry farming is a major determinant factor of targeted household income. The poultry production sales are the main sources of income generation for the targeted population of the study area and poultry farming is a good source for the reduction of food insecurity problems in rural areas. This study includes both primary and secondary data. The primary data was collected directly from the people who are active in this sector, while the secondary data was collected from different sources, including reports by the Afghan government, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank as well as data from other national and international donors. For the collection of primary data, Nangarhar province was chosen, which has twenty-two districts and a population of about 1,436,000 people. To carry out this study, 100 broiler poultry farms were selected randomly from five districts (Bihsod, Kama, KuzKunar, Surkhrud and Batikot) out of 22 districts in Nangarhar province. Within each district, 20 poultry farming enterprises were randomly chosen for interviews. The data was collected by a specially designed questionnaire of 100 poultry farms from Nangarhar province. In addition, both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to analyze the data.
