What we do

The Afghan Economic Society (AES) is the first countrywide academic society in Afghanistan.

It was initiated upon the initiative of lecturers, all with a Master degree from RUB University, from faculties of economics and management of University of Kabul, University of Balkh, University of Herat, University of Kandahar, University of Khost, University of Nangarhar, University of Faryab, University of Bamyan, University of Paktia and others in the beginning of 2016. We have an office in Kabul, Afghanistan as well as in Bochum, Germany.

The main activities and objectives of the AES are the following:

• Promoting and conducting high standard research to build a better understanding of Afghanistan’s economic challenges and opportunities

• Promoting relationships with the national and international public and private sector as well as academic bodies

• Supporting the relevant bodies to improve and standardize the higher education system in Afghanistan through the revision of curriculums, educational programs, teaching and examination procedures related to economics and management

• Establishing a data bank to store relevant data and publications in order to facilitate potential research and make information available

• Other necessary actions to build a better understanding of Afghanistan’s economy

All researchers took part in an academic program (Bachelor upgrading, Master program or Phd) offered by the Ruhr-University Bochum with the support of the DAAD from funds of the German Foreign Office, from the World Bank, from the Ministry of Higher Education of Afghanistan, from the NRW-Ministry of Science and Research as well as the NATO and other donors since 2004.

The AES is funded by the DAAD, currently until the end of 2021.
