The AES is the result of a longstanding Afghan-German cooperation

The Afghan Economic Society (AES) is the result of a longstanding cooperation with Afghan economic faculties, developed by the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy (German acronym: IEE) of RUB between 2002 and 2004. The cooperation aimed at improving teaching standards and the quality of research at Afghan economic faculties by building capacity of multipliers by offering a Bachelor and Master in Management and Economics Upgrading and later even a PhD program. In order to avoid the risk of brain drain and to provide research based consultancy to the public and private sector in Afghanistan, the AES was founded in 2016.

The AES is the first countrywide academic society in Afghanistan, which was initiated by lecturers of the faculties of economics and management of the Universities of Kabul, Balkh, Herat, Kandahar, Khost, Nangarhar, Faryab among others. These lecturers represent a group of around 100 past participants of the above mentioned academic programs offered by the Ruhr University Bochum with support of DAAD and of funds, offered by the German Federal Foreign Office, the World Bank, the Afghan Ministry of Higher Education, the NRW-Ministry of Science and Research, the NATO and other donors since 2004. The AES was  registered as an NGO with the Afghan Ministry of Economic Affairs in 2017.
